History Of Barcelona Cathedral

The history of Barcelona Cathedral has been dedicated to the Holy Cross. The current Cathedral's gothic style results from a building that started over the church's crypt in 1298 and lasted through the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. While the majority of Barcelona Cathedral was built by 1450, several elements, most notably its gothic façade, weren't finished until 1890.

At the end of the 19th century, Manuel Girona I Agrafel, an industrialist from Barcelona, offered to pay for the construction of the façade and its two side towers. This work was done in accordance with the architect Josep O. Mestres' plans, which were based on the original design that had already been sketched out in the 15th century. The dome's construction, which was finished in 1913, was the final phase of Mr Girona's enterprise.

What's Inside In The Cathedral Of Barcelona?

Each Chapel inside the cathedral is 9 metres high, 79 metres long, and 25 metres broad.93 metres long, 40 metres broad, and 28 metres high are the exterior measurements. The Barcelona Cathedral was constructed using a variety of sandstones, granite, and reinforced concrete for the naves. The majority of the vaulting is made of thin masonry timbrel. The cathedral's interior is decorated with a Gothic structure of interconnected apses.

The centre nave, two side aisles, and all three are joined together, however, the aisles stand out from the nave due to their noticeably lower ceilings. More than 140 saints, including the Virgin Mary and Santa Eulalia, the city's co-patron saint, have monuments and chapels inside the Barcelona Cathedral. The Santa Eulalia Crypt is also visible in front of the High Altar. The high altar is located inside the Barcelona Cathedral, which was built during the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries and offers a clear view of the crypt.

In the crypt of the church is where Saint Eulalia's remains are interred. Saint Raymond of Penyfort, Count Ramon Berenguer I and his third wife Almodis de la Marche, Bishops Berenguer de Palou II, Salvador Casaas y Pagés, and Arnau de Gurb are all buried in the church. One of the highlights of Barcelona Cathedral is the side Chapel of the Holy Sacrament and of the Holy Christ of Lepanto, built-in 1407. It is thought to have a cross inside that was there during the Battle of Lepanto. The number 13 white geese kept in the cathedral's cloister alludes to Eulalia's age at the time of her martyrdom

High Altar

Chapter House

The Chapterhouse of the Barcelona Cathedral, constructed in the 17th century, is situated opposite to the church of Saint Lucia. It is a rectangular area that is accessible from the Cloister and is covered by a barrel vault with lunettes.

The Cathedral Floor And Cloister
